WALT DISNEY STUDIOS
The Hockey Champ, Donald Duck's Nephew Animation Drawing.

Animation drawing appearing in The Hockey Champ, 1939. Colored pencil and graphite on 5-hole punched Disney animation paper. Initialed "G.K." in lower right image.

An adorable animation drawing of Donald's nephew with skates and a hockey stick from the classic short "The Hockey Champ," first released April 28th 1939. This scene was supervised by animator Eric Larson (one of Walt's "Nine Old Men," and the drawing was initialed by clean up artist "G.K.,"most likely George Kreisl (1913-1988), who began working at Disney in early 1937 and remained there for over two decades, providing animation on many classic shorts and features, including Lady and the Tramp.

  • Notes: The matching frame appears 2 min 17 sec into the cartoon, after Donald boasts to his mischievous nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie about his hockey prowess, to which they say "Aw phooey!" Donald then tells them: "I see that a demonstration is in order. So, I'll beat the three of you all by myself." Excited at the challenge, the trio (in the matching shot) jumps up and down in excitement. This nephew appears at the right in a green sweater.
