ORDERING ATTACKS TO COINCIDE WITH REVOLUTIONARY FORCES ASSAULT ON MEXICO CITY ZAPATA, EMILIANO. Typed Letter Signed, to General Genovevo de la O, in Spanish, urging him to prepare his troops for continuous attacks on Federal forces in his area beginning on the 15th when a nighttime assault on Mexico City is planned, and, in a typed postscript: "The manifestos that were sent to you must be reproduced and circulated in your area." 1 page, folio; some chipping at upper and lower edges with small area of loss at lower left corner, few small punch holes in left margin, short closed separation at horizontal fold, few scattered creases. Yautepec, Morelos, 12 July 1914

  • Notes: "I recommend that you, immediately upon receiving this communication, gather your forces and begin preparations so that, beginning on the fifteenth day, you can attack the enemy continuously for at least ten days--do not stop daily attacks on the forces of the evil and illegal Government, because on the day mentioned, the Capital of the Republic will be attacked during the night, and so you will understand that it is extremely necessary that you display great effort in your operations in the military zone. . . ."
On July 15, 1914, Mexico City became surrounded by revolutionary forces, with Emiliano Zapata advancing from Morelos in the south, and Pancho Villa marching from a decisive victory at Zacatecas in the north. Although the president, Victoriano Huerta, decided earlier to resign his office as part of a negotiation with the United States, Huerta was forced by the advance of Villa and Zapata to immediately deliver his resignation to Congress and flee Mexico City with his family to Spain.
