  • Notes: The sheet of stamps, signed across 4-5 columns at lower right, by each surviving flag-raiser with name and rank, and inscribed by Rosenthal in lower blank margin at right: "I took this photo at Iwo-Jima / February 23, 1945 -- / Joe Rosenthal, A.P." Inked in another hand at top left are names of the three marines who appeared in Rosenthal's photograph and were killed in the battle. Approximately 9 1/2x10 1/2 inches; faint marginal discoloration from prior matting, remnants of prior mounting at upper corners verso * Rosenthal (2). Typed Letters Signed, one inviting him to send stamps, the other sending signed stamps and suggesting he contact Marine Corps Public Relations Office for addresses of surviving marines. Manchester, NH, 21 July 1946 * Group of related items, including postcards from Gagnon's wife and mother, a letter from U.S. Marines Acting Director of Division of Public Information, enclosing [not present] addresses of flag-raising survivors, and the retained copies of the 13 letters sent to Rosenthal and the survivors by the collector between August 1945 and July 1946.
