WALT DISNEY STUDIOS / FANTASIA
Chernabog / Night on Bald Mountain Animation Drawing 1940.

A dramatic effects animation drawing of Chernabog with matching fog effects from the "Night on Bald Mountain" the penultimate sequence of Fantasia, 1940. Blue, red, and graphite pencil on paper. 316x392 mm; 12⅜x15⅜ inches.

The matching shot appears at the beginning of the sequence, when the Chernabog awakens and begins summoning the spirits of the dead (which in this drawing surround him in a mist). Because the scene was inked and painted in dark tones, there is quite a bit more detail of the character visible in this drawing than in the final film.

The piece is skillfully rendered in colored pencil and graphite on a piece of oversized (known then as "6 ½ Field" size) 5 hole punched Disney animation paper.

  • Notes: The animation for this scene was helmed by the legendary Bill Tytla (in one of his most famous animation ‘roles'), with John Reed (1908-1992) handling special effects animation of the spirits. From this point in the production process, Reed's effects drawing would have been meticulously transferred onto a cel at the ink and paint department translucent airbrushing, as it appeared in the final film.

During his time at Disney, John Reed contributed animation to many classic films in addition to Fantasia, including Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, and The Three Caballeros. He then relocated to England to work at Snow White director David Hand's studio Gaumont British Animation, and later served as animation director on the first British animated feature, Halas and Batchelor's Animal Farm (1954)."
