THOMAS ROWLANDSON
The Runaway Carriage.

Watercolor and pen and ink on cream laid paper, 1795. 211x310 mm; 8 1/2x12 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower left recto.

Provenance: Private collection, New England.

This is a common theme for the English satirical artist Rowlandson (1757-1827). A Four-in-Hand, or The Runaway Carriage is the title of a color etching with aquatint from 1791-93 made after another of his similar watercolors, as is A Runaway Carriage, 1793. He also made a watercolor of The Runaway Coach, circa 1791, now at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven.
