The Tavern Guild was founded in 1962 as the first LGBTQ business association in the United States, uniting the owners of San Francisco's gay bars against police raids, supporting unemployed members, and staging an annual Beaux Arts Ball. This lot includes 12 Tavern Guild of San Francisco fundraiser drag event programs: Fifth Annual Beaux Arts Ball, 28 October 1967 (plus duplicate); Sixth Annual Beaux Arts Halloween ball, [October 1968]; Empress Ball 1968 (plus duplicate); Empress Shirley, [1969]; Red, White and Blue Ball, [1969]; Empress de San Francisco Cristal Ball, 5 September 1971; Coronation Ball 1971 (plus duplicate); Coronation Ball 1972; and Coronation Ball 1973.

Also 6 miscellaneous San Francisco event programs from other organizations: "The Camptown Players Present Mavis as Big Me"; "The Coits Present The Return of The Women"; "A Bit of Old San Francisco," 1969; "Michelle in an Original Night Club Revue, It's Me Again," June 1969; "Michelle International Souvenir Program"; "First Annual Golden Awards," April 1970.

Provenance: Collection of longtime San Francisco activist Bill Plath (1925-2002), a founder of the Tavern Guild; his adopted son Michael Nelson Finn (1967-2021), who inherited Plath's 814 Grove Street home; purchased at the estate sale held at 814 Grove Street.
