Watercolor, gouache, brush and ink on cream wove paper, circa 1948. 629x457 mm; 24 3/4x18 3/4 inches.

With a brightly colored watercolor on the verso fom Bearden's 1947 series inspired by Rabelais.

Provenance: gift from the artist; Marie Rohan, New York. Ms. Rohan is the sister of the late Nanette Rohan, the wife of Romare Bearden.



Shortly after his return from the army, Romare Bearden made a series of watercolors and oils, The Passion of Christ, with elements based on the gospels of Matthew and Mark.
