ROBERT C. SHERRY (1919-1988)
American Revolution pulp illustration. Pulp magazine illustration, circa 1940. Pen and ink over pencil on board. 15 x 20 inches. Signed "RC Sherry" in lower right image.

This large and elaborately rendered ink illustration features a dramatic Revolutionary War era scene of a young couple and older gentleman fleeing by the light of a lantern. Sherry masterfully created a chiaroscuro effect in ink, capturing the suspense and excitement that made pulp fiction magazines a hugely popular form of entertainment.

Sherry is known to have provided illustrations for Columbia Publications, and there is a strong possibility that this image was used for a story in one of their pulp magazines. Bob Sherry's pulp illustrations very seldom come up for sale, and this is a particularly striking example.
