PALMER HAYDEN (1890 - 1973)
Larchmont Regatta.

Oil on linen canvas, circa 1932-35. 406x508 mm; 16x20 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Signed, titled and inscribed "65-97-121 1262" in oil, verso.

Provenance: private collection, New York. The painting is inscribed with inventory numbering used by the Harmon Foundation.

This fine painting from an early period in New York displays Palmer Hayden's long fascination with nautical scenes. Hayden began painting nautical subjects in Boothbay, Maine. In 1926, he won a gold medal and first award from the Harmon Foundation for his nautical watercolor from Maine, The Schooners. With his prize money, he left for Paris, and finally met his idol Henry Ossawa Tanner. Hayden left Paris for the artist colony town of Concarneau that summer and briefly returned to seascapes. With his return to New York from France in 1932, Hayden continued to paint scenes of racing sailboats, fishing vessels and steamships on the Long Island Sound and in New York harbor, and exhibited again at the Harmon Foundation in 1934 and 1935.
