NORMAN LEWIS (1909 - 1979)
Madam.

Lithograph on cream wove paper, 1943. 254x197 mm; 10 3/4x7 inches, wide margins. Arches watermark. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "To Dorothy-Kenneth" in pencil, lower margin.

A very good, dark impression of this extremely scarce print - we have not found a record of another impression.

In 1943, Norman Lewis was teaching painting at the new George Washington Carver School in Harlem, where he joined an impressive staff, including Ernest Crichlow (painting), Charles White (drawing), and Elizabeth Catlett (sculpture). 1943 was also one of the last years Lewis worked with social-realist subjects before moving into abstraction.
