(MASSACHUSETTS.) House of Representatives, Massachusetts.

  • Notes: Each volume consists entirely of composite portraits of the hundreds of members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, twelve men per page, each captioned with their name and home town. Among the notables in the 1873 volume is Lewis Hayden of Boston, a former slave who served a term in the legislature.
The former owner of these volumes, George H. Hoyt (1837-1877) of Athol, MA, had gone to Virginia to serve as one of John Brown's defense attorneys in 1860, and was then attorney general of Kansas before returning to serve in the Massachusetts legislature. His portrait appears in each volume.
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
