MARGARET LOWENGRUND (1902 - 1957)
Father and Daughter.

Pencil on stiff wove paper, 1934. 485x361 mm; 19x14¼ inches. Signed and dated lower left. With a small sketch of an infant's face verso.

Provenance
Estate of the artist, Woodstock.

  • Notes: This is a tender portrait of Lowengrund's husband, journalist Joseph Lilly, and their daughter Linda, born in 1934.

During the Great Depression, Lowengrund continued to exhibit her work, albeit in a limited capacity, and primarily worked as an illustrator during the economic downturn. In 1936, Lowengrund was employed by the Federal Art Project and worked in the Graphic Arts Division. In this era, she began to teach lithography at the New School for Social Research, and became more active in artist social welfare and political groups, like the American Artists' Congress. In 1936 Lowengrund and her family moved part time to Woodstock, New York, where she became a member of the Woodstock Artists Association while continually exhibiting in New York City through the 1940's and 1950's.
