Paris: Jacques Langlois, 1651

  • Notes: first edition of leonardo's masterly treatise on painting and the first reproduction of the mona lisa, (a detail of her head and shoulders. page 94). This widely disseminated work explained the master's theory of art as a geometrical science and direct observation of nature. It is a French, rather than an Italian publication, as the writings were first compiled by Leonardo's pupil, Francesco Melzi, who had inherited all his master's manuscripts and compiled them into the manuscript known as the Codex Urbinas 1270 around 1530 and this became the source for the 1651 publication. Italian editions followed and both use the same set of plates. Brunet V, 1258; Steinitz 22.
