(LANIER, SIDNEY.) Small archive of Sidney Lanier family papers.

  • Notes: This archive sheds light on the family of the popular Georgia poet Sidney Lanier (1842-1881). It was apparently compiled by his widow Mary Day Lanier (1844-1931) and eldest son, publisher Charles Day Lanier (1868-1945). It includes: A scarce first printing of Lanier's 1868 poem "For the Golden Wedding of Sterling and Sarah Lanier," 3 pages on one sheet with a manuscript correction (BAL 11242, citing only a photocopy) * An otherwise unknown single-sheet printing of his "In 1865, to J.L., an Unpublished Poem" which also appeared in a newspaper in 1894 * A clipped Lanier signature on a fragment of an envelope * 2 admission tickets from his Shakespeare lectures given in Baltimore, 1878-79 * An early manuscript copy of a review of Lanier's poem "Corn" from 1875 * A partial letter by Mary Day Lanier to her aunt circa 1871, discussing Sidney Lanier * A thick folder of clippings about Sidney Lanier circa 1881-1914 * A cabinet photograph of an unidentified young man bearing a close resemblance to Lanier, most likely one of his sons * Clippings relating to Mary Day Lanier's lecture tour, Charles Day Lanier's literary career, and other family members.
