John Herbert Brundage, who did not use his surname professionally, was a Canadian playwright and actor. As a young man in the 1940s, he was beaten and robbed while in drag--for which he was arrested for indecency. In 1964, he wrote his most important work, "Fortune and Men's Eyes," based in part on his prison experiences. It addresses the difficult subject of prison rape at a youth reformatory; the supporting character of Queenie is thought to be based on the author. The play was first produced in New York in 1965, and went on to become Canadian theater's most frequently performed work. A film version was released in 1971.

This program is for the 1969 Los Angeles production of the play. 1950s film star Sal Mineo directed and also starred as Rocky. Don Johnson (later of Miami Vice fame) played new inmate Smitty, who battles Rocky for dominance. The program features a full-page tribute by Mineo to his Rebel Without a Cause co-star James Dean, as well as cast bios and numerous photographs.
