    "That this affidavit is voluntarily offered by deponent, to be used in the defense of Leonard M. Kluftinger, whom deponent has known for about seventeen (17) years, and who is now involved in a denazification trial in Germany.
    "That deponent is the author . . . of . . . 'A Farewell to Arms', which book was banned and burned by the Germans in their original burning of books.
    "That deponent has served as a War Correspondent . . . has conducted reconnaissance with the French Maquis units . . . and was with the first American troops to enter Germany on the 14th of September, 1944.
    "That deponent was also with the American troops at . . . the Battle of the Bulge.
    "That in the Fall of 1929 at #6 Rue Ferou . . . deponent . . . heard Mr. Kluftinger speak strongly against Hitler. . . ."
