HABLOT KNIGHT BROWNE (1815 - 1882)
Bleak House caricature illustration.

Pen, pencil, and traces of wash on paper, circa 1852. 110x202 mm; 4¼x7⅞ inches. Inscribed and signed in pencil on verso, "Drawing of Bleak House, by Phiz."

  • Notes: An original ink self-caricature showing Browne and his art equipment - and his dog- being blown down to a battered house that represents Charles Dickens' novel, Bleak House.

Browne was a good friend of Dickens and the teasing message of his caricature - which was probably sent to Dickens - is that the illustrations that Browne provided for the first edition of the novel saved it from being a wreck.
