GROSZ, GEORGE. Ecce Homo. 84 lithographs including 16 color plates from watercolors. Folio, original monochrome lithographed pictorial stiff wrappers, spine browned, scattered toning, spotting, and edgewear; scattered light foxing throughout. Berlin: Malik, 1923

  • Notes: first edition C, the most complete and similar to the deluxe edition A, but with plates unsigned and in the tan pictorial wrappers. Grosz's most important work, his critique of Weimar Germany, was confiscated by order of the district court of Charlottenburg on April 25, 1923. In a court case the following year, Grosz and Malik were fined, and 17 of the 84 drawings and 5 of the 6 watercolor reproductions were ordered to be removed from the work--Dückers, page 207ff.
