(GENEALOGY.) Pedigree charts and family trees of the William Tatham family.

  • Notes: William Tatham (1752-1819) emigrated to the United States in 1769, soon settled on the Tennessee frontier, served on the American side in the Revolution, lived in North Carolina after the war, returned to his native England from 1796 to 1805, then spent his last days in Virginia as a pioneer of the United States Coastal Survey. He was best known for his Essay on the Culture and Commerce of Tobacco. The Dictionary of American Biography notes that he was a friend of Thomas Jefferson, and was "a man of brilliant parts and great versatility, but was eccentric and lacking in mental poise."
These genealogical charts were all apparently compiled while Tatham was visiting his family in England in 1789, several decades before genealogy became a popular American diversion. Some were commissioned by Tatham, and others were apparently drafted by him. They trace various branches of the Tatham, Marsden, Fleming, and Sandford families from the ninth century through the author's living cousins. Tatham had gone to England to claim his share of an inheritance, but soon returned empty-handed, as his family had, in his words, "the insolence and ill breeding to demand a retraction from my American errors." As Tatham left no family in America and had incurred heavy debts, his substantial library and personal papers were dispersed at auction shortly after his death. Thus these genealogical charts were apparently not seen by any of Tatham's several biographers. See Herndon, William Tatham: American Versatile, 66 and 283; also Garnett, John Marsden's Will. A detailed list of the charts is available upon request.
