ERNST KLINGER (1900-1962) STUDENTENHILFE - BALLFEST. 1927.
49x37 1/4 inches, 124 1/2x94 1/2 cm. Gebr. Köhler, Munich.
Condition A-: minor creases at edges; colors slightly attenuated. Mounted on Japan. Framed.
Klinger was a painter and graphic designer who studied art in Munich in the years following World War I and became a prominent member of the Munich School. His earliest paintings reflect his adherence to Die Neue Sachlichkeit [New Objectivity] but his later paintings are more abstract. He designed a number of posters throughout his career, almost entirely advertising festivals and balls. This early poster foreshadows some of the colors and forms which would populate his later paintings, but it also mirrors some of the concurrent design tenets emanating from the Bauhaus.
