"TAKING OFF MY GLASSES . . . IS . . . NOTHING BUT A MANNERISM" EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Kenneth E. Hammond, thanking for a Christmas gift, and stating that that way he removes and replaces his eyeglasses is merely a mannerism. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery; horizontal fold, remnants of hinging at upper edge verso. Augusta, GA, 31 December 1954

  • Notes: . . . "The habit I have of putting on and taking off my glasses during a television appearance is, I believe, nothing but a mannerism, since I am not conscious of the number of times I do it. . . ."
During Eisenhower''s presidency, actor Robert Montgomery was employed as a consultant for the purpose of improving the public image projected by Eisenhower''s televised press conferences and speeches. Toward the end of 1954, some critics objected that the President''s demeanor during TV appearances was too informal and therefore made him appear disingenuous, claiming that Eisenhower would not normally remove his eyeglasses for reading (of cue cards) unless instructed to do so.
