EDWARD SOREL (1929-)
A Toast to Neil Bush. 9-panel cartoon for an unknown publication, circa 1988. Pen and ink on Bristol board. 17 x 14 inches. Signed in final panel.

Neil Bush, son of former President George H. W. Bush, was a director at Denver-based Silverado Savings and Loan during the 1980s S&L crisis. An investigation by the U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision found that Bush had committed multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, involving numerous conflicts of interest.

Although Bush faced no criminal charges, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) filed a civil lawsuit against him and other directors. His involvement in Silverado's failure drew significant media attention, partly because his father was the Vice President at the time, leading to speculation about preferential treatment due to his political connections.
