EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) HARPER'S CHRISTMAS. 1896.
17x12 3/4 inches, 43 1/4x32 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: minor tears at edges; foxing in text and image.
Will Bradley, writing about Penfield in the first volume of Bradley: His Book (May 1896), praises the artistic technique behind each poster, stating "no one else has accomplished so much; no one else has even attempted it. It is not within the scope of this article to tell how all of this is affected, and yet the preparations of one color upon charcoal paper, and another color in spatter work and crayon upon another kind of paper, the hammering of a stipple in the metal plate, are all matter worthy of thought." Kiehl 187, DFP-I 363.
