DUTCH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY
The Annunciation to the Shepherds.

Brush and brown ink and gray wash heightened with white gouache, oxidized, on cream laid paper. 297x380 mm; 11 3/4x15 inches. Inscribed "A. Bloemaert" and with the initials "AB" in ink, lower left recto. Strasburg Lily watermark.

Provenance: Private collection, New York.

This drawing, in its figural arrangement, is loosely based on Abraham Bloemaert's (1566-1651) oil painting, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, circa 1600, private collection. The wood frame tent to the left (with a sleeping shepherd in the foreground) is also used in a 1599 engraving of the same subject by Jan Saeredam, after a drawing by Bloemaert (see Bartsch 24).
