BILLY DEBECK (1890-1942)
"Captain Jawge." Group of 2: Comic strip art for King Features Syndicate, 1931. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. 4 1/2 x 17 each, glued to 13 1/2 x 21-inch mat board. Signed and dated May 18 in final panel of strip #1, and May 19 in final panel of strip #2.

From the collection of Jules Feiffer.

  • Notes: Feiffer commentary: I love the early Barney Google that Billy DeBeck did. When Snuffy Smith took over, I hated it. I didn't like that at all. Before it went hillbilly, I loved the drawing. It was an old-fashioned Bigfoot comic style that I always loved. The characters are old fashioned, cartoony looking characters and style, and totally unsophisticated.
