BERENICE ABBOTT (1898-1991)
City Arabesque. June 9, 1938; printed 1980s.
Silver print, the image measuring 22⅞x17⅛ inches (58.1x43.5 cm.), the mount 36x30 inches (91.4x76.2 cm.), with Abbott's block-lettered signature in pencil on mount recto, and her Abbott/Graphics stamp on mount verso.

This photograph was taken from the top of what was then called 60 Wall Tower (now 70 Pine Street or the American International Building), looking northeast across Manhattan's financial district. When Abbott photographed 60 Wall, the building was six years old and the third tallest in the world; it remained the highest in downtown Manhattan until the construction of the World Trade Center.
