9 1/4x9 1/4 inches, 24 1/2x24 1/2 cm.

Painter, architect and ceramicist Bart Van der Leck founded the De Stijl movement with Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg in 1917 (though he only stayed a member for one year). He started his career working in stained glass studios, until he met Mondrian; he then developed his signature method of deconstructing forms into their basic shapes in primary colors, then arranging the fragments into a new abstract image. In 1930, he was commissioned by Dutch department store Metz & Co. to design interiors, window packaging, branding and advertising – including two versions of this paper shopping bag (this is the square version). He worked for the store until 1951, when he shifted to interior design for the remainder of his life.
