(ATLANTIC -- NEW WORLD.) Laurent Fries; after Martin Waldseemuller. Oceani Ocidentalis seu Terre Nove Tabula. Double-page woodcut map of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean, and southeast North America. 14¼x21 inches sheet size, wide margins, Latin text within woodcut borders on verso; small expert repair at lower center fold but overall a pleasing example. Lyon, 1535

  • Notes: One of the earliest obtainable maps of the New World, here we find a slightly reduced version of the 1513 "Admiral's Map", ornamented with a scene of cannibalistic people and a large American opossum in the southern landmass. Also with this edition, a ruled announcement citing Columbus's discoveries in 1492 appears below the island of Hispaniola. Burden 4.
