ANTONIUS MOLKENBOER (1872-1960) ST. FRANCISCUS. 1917.
42 1/2x29 1/4 inches, 108x74 1/4 cm. Lankhout, The Hague.
Condition B: replaced losses in top margin; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds.
A painter and graphic designer, Molkenboer studied art in Amsterdam, Paris and New York. He primarily designed theatrical sets and costumes and, in this instance, the poster, too. This Dutch design, for a pantomime performance based on the life of St. Francis, seems heavily influenced by the strict, symmetrical designs of Richard Roland-Holst, in which the vertical central figure (here a melding of Christ and St. Francis) is surrounded by empty space. Molkenboer's brother, Theodorus, was also an artist and poster designer. Dutch Poster 147.
