  • Notes: Albert Alexander Smith's lauded period of study at the National Academy of Design in New York was interrupted by his enlisting to fight in World War I. After his honorable discharge, he continued to build his reputation at the National Academy, and moved to depicting African American life in the South. He moved to Europe in 1920 and established himself in Paris as an artist and jazz musician in Montparnasse. During the 1920's and 1930's Smith traveled through Europe, exhibiting his works, including his acclaimed etchings, on two continents.
